Cambodia Challenge for Shelter: A Journey of Purpose, People and Gratitude

In October, I had the privilege of joining 30 Royal LePage Realtors from across Canada for the Cambodia Challenge for Shelter. This was a five-day, 100-kilometre trek through the jungles, rice paddies, streams, and villages of rural Cambodia. Together, 120 participants across four groups raised more than $1.5 million in support of women’s shelters and programs that educate and empower women and children affected by domestic violence.

The trek was as beautiful as it was demanding. We faced scorching 40°C heat with 100% humidity, and many trekkers battled blisters and heat rash along the way. Yet, every step reminded us of our purpose. Each day, we heard the stories of brave women (all trekkers) who endured domestic abuse and found the strength to leave and create a better life for themselves and their children, experienced violence in their childhood home, or lost family to domestic violence.

We also experienced incredible moments of connection. Our route took us through small villages where we were welcomed into homes for rest or lunch. The Cambodian people, many of whom live very simply, were some of the most genuine, kind, and generous people I have ever encountered. The children’s bright smiles, cheerful greetings, and endless high fives filled our hearts. These moments are core memories I will always carry with me.

Through your generous support, I raised more than $16,000 for this important cause. Eighty percent of the funds will stay local, supporting Optimism Place Women’s Shelter and Support Services in Stratford, while twenty percent will go to the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation, which provides national education and prevention programs.

I am deeply grateful to the incredible team at both Stratford Optimism Place and the Royal Lepage Shelter Foundation for the life-changing work they do every day to support women and children in our communities. They help break the cycle of domestic violence and give families the chance to build safer, brighter futures.

Thank You

To everyone who donated, sponsored or attended a fundraising event, or sent words of encouragement, thank you from the bottom of my heart. This experience has been truly life-changing, and your kindness, generosity and support made it possible.

My heart is full. ❤️
