Before You Hibernate: Fix the Little Things That Drive You Crazy

Every home has them. The cupboard door that never quite closes. The hook that falls off whenever someone hangs up a coat. The room where you need three lamps and a small miracle to read a book.

We jiggle the handle, tell ourselves we’ll fix it eventually, or stop noticing altogether. But with more time indoors ahead, November is a good time to tackle a few little annoyances.

Start With Your Daily “I Need to Fix That”

Tighten the loose handle. Adjust the cupboard hinge. Add a doorstop where the handle keeps hitting the wall. Fixing something you use every day can be surprisingly satisfying.

And yes, replacing the burnt-out bulb counts. Even if it has been out since February.

Give Winter Gear Somewhere to Go

Before your entrance becomes an obstacle course, put away the sandals, clear out unworn coats and give boots a landing spot.

A sturdy mat, accessible hooks and a basket for mittens can make mornings easier. If children can reach the hooks, even better. Whether they use them is another conversation.

Make Peace With the Dark

November turns “I’ll do that after dinner” into “Apparently it’s already bedtime.”

Would a reading lamp make your favourite chair more inviting? Is the kitchen work area too dim? A few lighting changes can make those long evenings more comfortable.

Deal With the Drawer. You Know the One.

The one that requires a little force, a little luck and the understanding that something may fall out.

Pick one drawer or cupboard. Keep what you use and let go of what you don’t. The goal is simply to find the scissors.

Make Room for Something You Enjoy

Clear the chair that has become clothing storage. Bring the board games within reach or make a comfortable spot for morning coffee. Getting ready for winter should include making home somewhere you enjoy spending time.

Enjoy the Improvements Yourself

We often see homeowners tackle little repairs just before selling, then ask, “Why didn’t we do this years ago?”

You deserve to enjoy those improvements too. This November, choose two or three small things that would make everyday life easier.

Preferably before you need to find the snow shovel.
